In a troubling, but unsurprising development, the United Methodist Church’s General Conference in Charlotte, N.C., has solidified its apostasy and is upholding aberrant teachings on sexuality and marriage. By an overwhelming majority, the delegates voted 667-54 to strip away any remaining, though rare, doctrinal safeguards that uphold the sanctity of marriage as between one man and one woman and the scriptural qualifications for clergy.
These revisions effectively dismantle the UMC’s historic position which, many, many moons ago, at least gave lip service to biblical directives against same-sex marriage and the ordination of homosexuals. As with all of the mainline denominations, such standards have been abandoned in favor of appeasing a world increasingly hostile to Christian values.
The legislative actions undertaken this week include the abolition of penalties for clergy who conduct same-sex marriages, the removal of barriers to LGBTQ people entering ministry, and the elimination of prohibitions against using church funds to support pro-LGBTQ ministries. Further, the conference has imposed a moratorium on disciplining clergy who breach these long-held biblical standards.
