Angry, Racist Westminster Theological Seminary Graduate Demands Reparations From White People
Ekemini Uwan recently took to Twitter to lament her frustration with white people in the Southern Baptist Convention who, according to her, owe her and other black people a “free education” among various other reparative acts.
Uwan, according to her online biography, is
a public theologian who received her Master of Divinity degree in 2016 from Westminster Theological Seminary (WTS) in Philadelphia, PA. She is the co-host of Truth’s Table podcast alongside Michelle Higgins and Dr. Christina Edmondson. During her time at WTS, Ekemini won the 2015 Greene Prize in Apologetics Award. In 2018, Christianity Today named her among “10 New or Lesser-Known Female Theologians Worth Knowing.”
Uwan posted the following comments on Twitter in response to Southern Baptist Theological Seminary’s publication on historical racism at their seminary:
Antithetical to the gospel of Jesus Christ, Uwan demands reparations from whites–that is, to pay for their ancestor’s sins against blacks. “Reparations is a biblical concept and the gospel itself is a reparation,” she says. Ludicrous. The gospel is an act of mercy, wiping the slate clean for those who would repent and believe in Jesus. In fact, the gospel is the exact opposite of reparations. The gospel is a substitutionary atonement. Christ has paid the penalty in our place, and we are forgiven because of HIS righteousness.
Further, we can no more repent and repay for someone else’s sin than we can go to the bathroom for someone else. It’s ridiculous to demand that a certain people group repay another people group for the sins of (some of) that’s people group’s ancestors based solely on the color of one’s skin.
The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not suffer for the iniquity of the father, nor the father suffer for the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.
Ezekiel 18:20 (ESV)
I’m afraid that Uwan doesn’t understand the gospel, and is merely an angry, racist bigot who needs to repent and believe in Jesus Christ.
