The Bible is the inspired and inerrant Word of God, serving as the ultimate authority and guide for all believers, and in it are all of the authoritative teachings and moral principles that man is obligated to obey.
However, many pastors in modern times seek to placate the secular world by diluting the severity of certain sins, particularly homosexuality, by shifting focus away from this sin and towards others that even pagans would consider wrong. This is because they fear being labeled as "intolerant" or "bigoted" by secular society, but as pastors, they cannot completely ignore the Bible's teachings on the sinfulness of homosexuality. So, they attempt to reconcile their stance by grouping homosexuality with other sins such as greed and pride.
Sadly, this desire to appease is prevalent among many Evangelical leaders who aim to minimize the significance of certain Bible passages, particularly those that address homosexuality as a sin. For example, Andy Stanley, a well-known pastor and author, has recently referred to these biblical passages as "clobber passages," implying that they were only used in the past to discriminate against LGBTQ+ individuals. This perspective not only ignores the clear teachings of the Holy Scriptures but also undermines the Bible's authority as the perfect and unassailable Word of God.
The idea is to try to make it sound like God thinks of homosexuality no differently than he thinks of any other sin, therefore, making it look like homosexuality isn't being singled out as particularly heinous. But this weak and unprincipled approach is an attempt to build rapport with the world and avoid future persecution and doesn't comport with Scripture.
For instance, in the Old Testament, we can observe how God's wrath and judgment were brought upon those who defied his moral law, and the sin of homosexuality was deemed as a most detestable offense. The Levitical Code, found in Leviticus 18:22, states, "Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable." Similarly, Leviticus 20:13, declares, "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads." These passages demonstrate the seriousness with which the Lord views the sin of homosexuality and the severe consequences that are associated with it.
This same law, given by God Himself, did not treat all sins equally. And since the moral law is a reflection of God's character, the judicial law He gave correspended with the seriousness of the offense committed against him. For example, greed, or covetousness, was considered a violation of the Ten Commandments and was punished through various means, including fines, restitution, and public shaming. In Exodus 22:7, a person who stole an animal was required to pay back double its value.
